Australia - climate change, coal fired vs renewable power supply

Australia is a signatory to the Paris Accord on climate change and the PM has vowed to hold fast with this commitment.

We have been a country that relied for electricity security on coal fired and gas powered infrastructure.  Over the last 10 years renewable power resources of wind, wave and sun have come to the fore but the sceptics claim that they do not provide power supply security especially for our east coast.

We are now at a watershed with a new report from our chief scientist that calls for a gradual change to renewable power supplies as they become cheaper with technological advances.  He wants to reward those who supply clean power but does not vilify the coal producers as he sees them having a role for some years to come.

Our federal government is now faced with a crucial decision in the light of the findings in this report and pressure from business and industry who are at the stage of demanding some clarity on power supply and cost of power.  Within the ranks of the government MPs there is some disagreement about the best course and the opposition parties are claiming to be willing to work with the government to ensure cheaper, consistent and climate change friendly power supplies in Australia.  The gauntlet has been thrown down to the government.  Watch this space.

May the Force be with us!
