Aussie Federal Government in a mess
I hate to admit the title of this post but it is true. Here are their key dilemmas:
They want to have a postal vote on same sex marriage but the parliament has not approved the cost and the government now must wait on a High Court ruling to see whether it can go ahead. The postal vote is the effete version of the original notion of having a plebiscite on this issue.
Several senators and a the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives are awaiting a High Court ruling to see whether the are eligible to be in parliament as they may have breached section 44 of the Constitution in that they hold dual citizenship. This is not allowed under the Constitution. As the Federal conservative government only has a one seat majority in the House of Representatives they are on a knife edge.
The current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is under heavy criticism for not being able to make progress with important legislation although in the polls he is the preferred Prime Minister. At least one commentator is calling for his head and the reinstatement of the recently ousted PM Tony Abbott.
May the Force prevent said Tony being reinstated. He is not popular across Australia and did silly things while PM like knighting Prince Phillip the Queen of England's husband with the highest Australian honour. I don't know one person who thought this was a good move especially as the movement for Australia too become a republic is alive and well.
There is also an argument raging about the government trialling a welfare card whereby those on government welfare benefits in certain geographic locations will have their cash frozen almost entirely into a card. This card can be used to purchase the daily essentials for living. The aim is to stop said persons spending their cash on drugs with the hope that they will turn their lives around and find a job. Good luck with this one as having spent some 6 years working with drug addicted persons, the welfare card wont cure the extant drug addiction. I may even force drug addicted people into more crime to feed the habit. Some Australian indigenous communities are caught upon in this experiment.
Finally because this government stopped refugees going into Australia illegally by boat there are hundreds of refugees in camps in countries outside Australia with these camps funded by Australia. The ruling is that those who have attempted to come to Australia illegally by boat will under no circumstances be let into Australia. There is a shaky deal with the US to take some of these illegal immigrants but the Donald is not happy with this Obama arranged deal. He said it was a dumb deal but he would honour it. We will see.
Australian Pollies are unpopular with we there great unwashed. We long for the strong leadership of the past.
