Labor leader accused of not listening

The Hon Bill Shorten, leader of the Federal Labor opposition in parliament, has recently been accused of not listening to members of his shadow cabinet on reacting to various budget measures of the Coalition government.  I hope this is not true.  If he decides to go it alone he can kiss goodbye to ever being Prime Minister of Australia.

Further shame on then Australian government

The federal government is closing down the Manus Island detention centre for people who tried to get into mainland Australia by illegal boat entry.  Several months ago they told the refugees that the centre would be closed and that they would have to move to other accommodation provided out in the wider Manus community.  The refugees refuse to move even though water, power and food are now no longer supplied to the detention centre with the closing date having passed.  The refugees claim that they are not safe in the wider Manus community. The alternative accommodation has been provided but the government seems to have failed to encourage these refugees to move to it over an extended period of time. Part of what the government should have done is to liaise with the Manus authorities to ensure that it was safe for the refugees.  Somewhere, somehow the Australian government seems to have botched the whole thing.  Now the UN is accusing it of breaching its humani...

School funding for Australian schools

Constitutionally school education is a matter for each Australian state but the Federal Government over the years has kicked in with funding as it is the major collector of tax across our country. Recently a report known as the Gonski Report commissioned by a Federal Labor government recommended needs based funding.  The recommendations were put on the back burner when the Federal government changed to a conservative coalition government.  Now that government has come up with Gonski 2.0 and it is in the throes of seeing this legislation through to becoming law.  They have to negotiate with various political representatives from other parties in the Senate (the upper house) if they what to achieve this.  Gonski 2.0 is also needs based but will not deliver the funding levels that the previous Labor government supported in Gonski 1.0.  There is a bit of a consensus around the traps that Gonski 2.0 is a good start.
